my city is still breathing
back in the saddle

so I was all excited for my holiday this past weekend. And it ended up being alot of fun, although it did not at all go as planned. We left edmonton at 5 am so we could be at the lake in time for lunch.. we had planned on stopping in Valemount for gas but soon found that the power was out, and we;d have to wait a while in line. Screw this, we have a quarter tank left, we said, and continued on to Blue River where the power was also out. by this point we'd heard rumours of the yellowhead being closed off at little fort, just north of our destination of Barriere, so we decided we'd stop. Getting gas was fun. Lisa and Maggie drank beer. I was all choked that I couldn't, I had to drive. About an hour and a half later we were finally back on the road with a full tank of gas. Life was good. we drove a little longer and were stopped at Little Fort. suprise suprise, power was out here too. so we took the alternate route, going to Kamloops via 100 mile house .. fun fun.. this is where it all got tedious. I was tired, out of cell range, and had no idea where my family was. They had officially been evacuated from East Barriere Lake, although I wouldn't have been suprised if my father refused to go (he's like that). The car overheated on the big hill on Hwy 24 (if you know the area) as we were driving up it at 2 in the afternoon in temperatures exceeding 40 celcius (and we'd been driving for 9 hours nearly straight by this point).. I eventually got ahold of my parents, who were about an hour behind us in the whole travelling thing, and were also heading to Kamloops (as there were places to stay there. HAve I mentioned why they were evacuated? There's major forest fires in the Kamloops area. Especially between Kamloops and Little Fort. ya.. so eventually we got to Kamloops, around 6 that night. We stayed with some friends of the family, who were amazingly hospitable and wonderful. the following day was my birthday. we had cake and drank beer and watched the fires burn on the hill. Apparently the cabin is going to be fine, although there's no chance in hell we can get in to see for a while, the fires are blocking all roads in. I was devestated when I heard that my home (that's what the cabin is for me) was quite possibly burning, so am very happy to hear it'll be ok. Sunday we came home. it's a good thing we did, the other two routes east from the bc interior are closed so anyone coming to Alberta has to take hwy 1. It's a long weekend. The roads were insane yesterday, I"m sure they'd be hell today.. Anyhow, I gotta go get ready for work. I decided to go back early seeing as I'm home and all...
