my city is still breathing
back in the saddle

from Winnipeg we went off to Moose Jaw, where we stayed at the lovely Capone's Hideaway Motel. Apparently you can put a quasi-antique chair in a hotel room and call it a "theme hotel". The most exciting thing about Moose Jaw was that there was a beer opener in the bathroom. yes, you heard me right. so when you're sitting on the toilet and your Pil runs empty you can reach into the 24 you have stashed in hotel ice in the tub and open another one. HOT. or at least Herr Pinchy thought so.. I should proably take this opportunity to explain that Herr Pinchy was a road-trip mascot I was given by my good friend Lisa in Saskatoon. She brought him all the way from PEI for me and would be proud to see him drinking cheap beer.
On another classy note we both lost about $5 at the Moose Jaw Casino. Chatted with some older ladies. woo hoo. am not considering moving to Moose Jaw. ever.

throughout the praires we saw beautiful scenery such as the above. but then I'm a big praire fan. you wouldn't know this was taken out of the window of a car going 120 km/h would you?

ahh the centre of canada. Fari and Herr Pinchy (more on him later) pose in front of it. I guess one could say this is where the entertainment of a half-canada (demicanadian?) trip begins. or should begin. right outside lovely winnipeg, manitoba.

so I'm in Winnipeg - dude do I love this city. Saskatoon was good, I drank and partied and all on a monday night. and I had the hostesses with the mostesses in the Cav. sisters so life was wonderful. Winnipeg's been uneventful, a whole lot of senseless drinking and eating and the regular - oh and rain. lots of rain. Drive out was also uneventful - got a chip in my windshield (finally) while driving through a construction site on an unpaved road behind a gravel truck. It was bound to happen. Am currently enjoying a lovely stay at the luxurious maplehurst inn, and by maplehurst inn I mean Carrie & Geoff's. rockin'. must go and have pedicure or something. will start with real trip posting soon - and we have a mascot! more on this later..

so I figured one last little post before I set off for the full blown praires. Book club was awesome this week - went from 5 members to the whopping 7 (!!) and are reading Rudyard Kipling's Kim for next month - let me know if you want in on this action..
in other news, went to a few good shows this week - Thursday night featured Carolyn Mark & Her New Best Friends, Geoff Burner and Ford Pier at the Ironwood over in Inglewood. Great show, I'm hooked on the new Carolyn Mark album, go buy it...
Friday saw me fighting with Crowfoot Dodge. I hate Dodge dealerships much more than I need to.
Saturday saw another show - this time Frog Eyes, Mongoose and The Doers at broken city. I really like broken city so just being there made me happy. The Doers were amusing, Mongoose was entertaining, big on finger pointing and almost too energetic, while Frog Eyes was quite entertaining - sadly by the time they got on stage I was super tired...
bought way too many cds (justifiable as they are for my trip!!) in the past few days - won't mention them but one is so great I figure I'll give it a little push - The Future Soundtrack For America compilation is not only chock-full of musical goodness, all proceeds go to a wonderful cause as well. check it out.

Hope you've all filled out the Alberta: It's your future survey at least once. you know it's not flawed, nor a vote grabber or anything (hey look! King Ralph actually wants our opinions), but instead a, ahem, scientific way for the Conservative provincial government to get the opinions of the voters so, when there is another landslide victory due to apathy in November, they can pretend we all said we wanted more oil wells and less waterfalls in our province, because that's what the "survey" said. *thinking out loud* hmmmm, I wonder if people in other provinces can fill it out. I mean you just have to say you're from calgary and want more money spent on education or, um, say, health care, or, uh lets say, um, protecting the environment.. it's not like other interest groups haven't already gotten in on it...

you have until Sept 24. Try to get your hands on a few mail in copies too..

This is the funniest website I have seen in a long time. I almost fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard. Go through them all. Then think about what you want for dinner. Frankfurter Spectacular, anyone?

My brother and I went to Douglas Coupland's September 10, 2001: A Social History of the 1990's tonight at OYR. Having been a fan of Coupland since I discovered this thing called literature, I was quite excited about it. And I won't say I was disappointed. Billed as a preview, or work in progress, it was quite good, assuming you enjoy Coupland's books. Performed by Coupland himself, the one man monologue style was akin to having Coupland lecture your Poli class for 2 hours. And it was cute - Coupland would forget his lines and would yell up to Brad, the stagehand or whatever, to cue him. Cute. Sometimes I almost wondered if it was part of the show, it made Coupland (or his character, which would have been himself), seem more human - as in "see I can't even remember what I'm supposed to be saying here". At the same time, I really enjoyed the whole feeling that we were having a conversation with Doug, and the cueing took away from that (am tempted to get into a nice ol' Brechtian Epic Theatre tirade here, but won't). The show ran just under 2 hours, and I must admit getting fidgety by about the 90 min mark - the Coupland lecture - with its wavering train of thought, entertaining for the first 3/4, was simply becoming tedious - but then I was tired and hungry as well. The premise was interesting - that the "decade" the 1990s ended September 11, 2001. Which I would agree with - it's when everything changed. So we basically followed Coupland through a souvenir of Canada style trip down memory lane, remembering everything from the start of the Gulf War (part 1) until the twin towers came down. as well as a bit before and a bit after. no where near as political as it could have been - but offered an interesting side to Coupland as well as into the decade known as the 1990s from a man (a canadian no less) considered a cultural icon of the time. Go see it if you're in Calgary in the next few days.

In other excitement I spent the day having lunch and walking around 17th ave and, of course, picked up a few new and exciting cds (ok only one can really be considered new, but all are new to me). First I stopped over at Sloth and used my Friends of CJSW card (possibly for one of the last times before the new ones come out) to purchase Five Dollar Bill from The Corb Lund Band. Then I sauntered down to Megatunes (with a few stops along the way to enjoy the finer points of life), where lovely Justin sold me Joel Plaskett Emergency's lovely second CD Truthfully Truthfully (just threw that one in the ol' cd player - damn is it good so far - and I'm barely into track one), Po' Girl's self-titled and the Garden City Soundtrack (really didn't enjoy the movie, as a side note, but Iron & Wine covering one of my favourites from the Postal Service? how could I say no). I thank Kristin D. and cute boys the world over for helping inspire this latest bout of cd purchase (although I am always amazed by how big Corb Lund is in the Pass).

Enough scenster-esque posturing.

Must find job in Calgary. or not.
