my city is still breathing
back in the saddle

you know how there's always some landmark in any city that you can always find due to the amazingly huge amount of road signs pointing one in the direction to said landmark? Like in Winnipeg there's the airport. as long as you know where the airport is you can find your way around the city in relation to it, because there's road signs pointing to it everywhere. It's almost as if they're encouraging you to get the hell out of there and go to some warm, tropical destination. It's easier to find than hwy 1, and there are about 20 different routes to it from where I used to live, in the south east, so one can imagine the number of signs. Calgary's different. When I first moved here, it was simply the U of C. you could find the U of C from anywhere. Now it seems to be post secondary institutions in general. A few years ago I noticed signs pointing to Devry all over the place, but those seem to have either disappeared or faded into the other millions of road signs littering our roads and distracting drivers. I've recently begun noticing Mount Royal College signs all over the place. What does this say about Calgary's self-image? Winnipeggers are encouraged to get the hell out of town, Calgarians are encouraged to get a sub-par overpriced education so they can go work for one of the many lovely oil companies. It's odd.
By the way, the new weakerthans album came out today (I guess yesterday technically).. it fucking rules. I got the last copy at the record store, so damn was I a happy camper....
