my city is still breathing
back in the saddle

we rolled into Calgary just in time for rush hour on tuesday, September 28th. went home, got changed, made an appearance at the ship. were going to go to a CIFF event but it was sold out. so we went home.
woke up Wednesday and went to check out the Calgary Zoo. dude is the Zoo a cool place - I would highly recommend it for a date. yes, there's that caged animal thing but they seem to be treated pretty well - then again, what do I know. Wednesday night we went out for dinner with my family to El Sombrero and then back to the ship for a pint with my darling brother.
Thursday we started off at the calgary tower. I like sitting up there and looking down on the city. unfortunately, it was rainy and therefore the view was obscured, but, somehow, the urban sprawl seems less evil when you're looking down on it. maybe because it brings attention to all the parks involved. or maybe because I get to run around the tower and point at all the places I've lived. I like causing scenes. Thursday night we started what would turn into a weekend of scensterness. the WCMA showcases had begun, so we went and checked out Ridley Bent, the Mad Bomber Society and Chad Van Galen at Broken City. Ridley Bent was awesome. I lauged when I heard the term "hick-hop" that some music reviewer type had coined to label him, but I thought he was really cool. The Mad Bomber Society got the house dancing, as well as themselves. It had been a while since I'd seen people playing insturments on random tables throughout a bar - I had a good time, and I don't really even like ska all that much. Chad Van Galen was great as always, but a little to calm for the acts preceeding. my companions weren't as impressed as they could have been. too bad.
went shopping Friday or maybe we went shopping Thursday and went to Lake Lousie/Moraine Lake/Banff on Friday. I can't remember. went back to broken city that night for more WCMA action - it was Burnt, Kraink, Eugene Ripper and Canned Hamm this night. can't really remember much of the bands with the exception of Vancouver's Canned Hamm. If these guys are playing anywhere near you check them out, they're the coolest thing since umm, something else cool. These guys can't sing or dance but are by far the most entertaining thing I have seen in a long time. they invite audience participation, and were in their boxers at one point. some of my drinking companions were not impressed but I know I was. and I was the DD so we all know it wasn't the liquor speaking. honest. I will so check these guys out next time they're in Calgary.
can't remember how we spent Saturday, but went to the night gallery that evening for the boompa! records showcase, featuring the dudes, sparrow, run chico run, billy + the lost boys and the salteens. I'll admit I missed the Salteens, the night gallery was becoming too hot and I had to get out. the Dudes played much better than any of the previous times I'd seen them - I was pleasantly surprised. Was also quite impressed with run chico run.
Sunday we headed west to Kamloops.
