my city is still breathing
back in the saddle

and it's not quite a month..

I've been working nights lately. I go to bed after sunrise and wake up once the afternoon heat has kicked in. life is good.

I bought two CDs today: Stephen Malkmus' Face the Truth and Weezer's Make Believe. Haven't listened to either yet so no opinion for today. That said, other recent purchases that come highly reccomended are Ridley Bent's BLAM, Pretty Girls Make Graves' The New Romance and Christine Fellows' The Last One Standing. Especially the Christine Fellows' album. I ordered it from Maplemusic and, while unimpressed with the cracked CD case I received, am in love with the album. Even though it's four years old. Christine does indie-folk (?? just coined that term - although I'm sure it's been used before) the classical way - bringing in such instruments as piano (mainly - imagine fellow Winnipeg Chantal Kreviazuk without the power-ballad-teen-movie feel - as a sidenote I do own Kreviazuk's Colour Moving and Still therefore no hard feelings....), organ, viola, mandolin, and glockenspiel. All this plus Christine's voice - which, while pleasing, is imperfect enough to make me enjoy singing along - yet realise that I can't sing like that. Christine Fellows is playing the Calgary Folk Fest this year, hopefully I'll get to see her play.

Went to a few shows recently too. Most memorable was ... and you will know us by the trail of the dead. While I have enjoyed Source Tags and Codes I'm not a huge fan. I got two tickets to the show in an exchange I made with my brother for Weakerthans tickets. Had we not done this I doubt I would have gone. I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the band, and was impressed with the constant role-changing - guitar to drums to vocals, depending on the song. The band pulled out quite a few rock star moves, the show started with a bang, I think the only dissapointment were the two roadies standing at either side of the stage, looking like they were waiting for the band to finish for the entire show. They looked incredibly unamused.

My ipod is kaput (I can't access the menu - luckily I had it on random when this happened and am not stuck listening to something crappy yet guilty-pleasure-ish like Sean Paul all day. Lucky for me it's still under warranty so I called apple today and they're sending me a little box to send it in for repairs. Unfortunately, I'll have to walk to work in silence once I send it in. maybe I'll pull out the discman as silence does not seem to be an option.

I had more to post about, and I should, it's been a while. That said, I can't come up with anything right now. I began posting because it's almost two am, there's nothing on tv and I tried hooking up the nintendo and found out that neither of my controllers work. shitty, trust me. I was super stoked because when I turned it on (before I tried the controller) it worked. First try. no lines on the screen or anything. that never happens. now I'll have to troll ebay, flea markets and the random electronic stores of my fine city until I find a controller.

Comments:
Hey, you're back! Lots to comment on with this post:

1. Night shifts: I work them as well - aren't they fabulous?

2. Stephen Malkmus: I saw him play with the Jicks at Lee's Palace in Toronto. Awesome show. Along the same line, I'd someday like to see Will Oldham and David Berman, too. Though maybe not togther - that may be asking too much.

3. Folk Fest: am waiting with bated breathed. Wilco's Jeff Tweedy will be there, and that's all I really need.

4. Sean Paul: um.

5. Nintendo: I hope you're talking the classic 8-bit variety. Hell, the 16-bit was good as well - I continue to play both with some frequency. Current old favourite is Dr Mario.

That's all.

only replying to those required:
1. yes, yes they are.
3. did not realise Jeff Tweedy would be there, now I have to go!
4. how can you not think sean paul is catchy and makes you wanna dance. while walking down centre street. during rush hour. alone.
5. 8 bit. tetris and mario 3. got it working, just had to press the start button really really hard.

does this count as a post?

No answering comments does not count as a post, but often your loyal fans take it as one...

;-)

Did you change jobs?

yes Allie, yes I did. although not since the last time I posted about working for a large canadian company and actually being treated like a human being.

Greetings from an old friend who just happened upon your blog. Maybe I'll see you at the ship this summer.
