my city is still breathing back in the saddle |
Monday, January 10, 2005 warning: the following post may offend. I missed one of my major guilty pleasures of 2004 in the list in the previous post and felt a need to share. I haven't really hidden this guilty pleasure and will proably continue it well into 2005. yes, yes, it's making fun of Awake! magazines. You see, when I was working in the Crowsnest Pass this nice woman would bring us in stacks of Watchtower (click this link, there's an article about the mark of the beast and what it means on there right now - AWESOME!!) and Awake! every month. While Watchtower was always much too boring to hold my interest, I continue to be facinated by Awake! It's even become a way to bond with friends and family - we often make fun of them together, calling each other to share our favourite passages. My aunt mails them up to me from the Pass, knowing what a kick I get out of them. But, seriously, with articles like "Young people ask... what's so wrong with telephone sex" (February 22, 2004), "Satisfying Our Hunger for Friendship" (December 8, 2004) (this article includes a large section about whether or not men and women can have a platonic relationship... and what the Bible has to say about it), "The Bible's viewpoint: Is Your Personality Determined by Blood Type?" (February 8, 2004) and "Young People Ask... What if He Says No?" (December 22, 2004) how can you not be entertained. We've also got great quotes like (this is Kristin's favourite): "Joy comes to all who serve Jehovah, and married people do not have a monopoly on it." ("Young People Ask... What if He Says No?" December 22, 2004, 18). Kristin's taken to paraphrasing it on a fairly regular baisis with the shortened "Married people don't have a monopoly on happiness, you know." I also really enjoy how they randomly quote various versions and translations of the bible, and then sprinkle their texts with quotes from relatively reputable sources to make them appear accurate. It's rad - my favourite parts are when they quote 3 or 4 different passages from different books of the bible after a single sentence - which, to me, implies you must read all 4 together to get the idea. Interpretation.... Or how the bible holds the answer to everything. I'll give you an example from "Young People Ask... What if He Says No?" simply because it's one of my current favourites. One part of this article tells of Marcia, who had a young man in her life who she felt was "showing her special attention" (19). So, she "asked him about his intentions, he told her that he was not interested in a relationship with her." (19). Obviously, Marcia was upset. So she pulled out her handy dandy bible and there was the answer: "Recalling the Bible's requirements for hubands helped her to realize that he simply did not measure up. This helped her to overcome her sadness." (19). Unfortunately for those of us not as familiar with the Bible as Marcia, the Bible passage outlining husband requirements was not given in the article. I guess I'll have to continue using my own, which fluctuate with amount of beer and my mood that day. Darn. There was also a great article in the December 8, 2004 issue titled: "The Bible's Viewpoint: The Internet, How To Avoid the Dangers" (18). Facinating. I won't spoil it for you all, but let me tell you, the internet is an evil place, especially those chat rooms. Lucky for us, Bible principles can safeguard us. And they're detailed. I'll spare you all, though. Anyhow, clearly Awake! (and the Jehovah Witness church) is doing something right - a heathen like me looks forward to reading them from time to time. And I write one of the longest posts in recent history about it. posted by kim | 11:31 p.m.| (0) comments Wednesday, January 05, 2005 ok, in the spirit of the top ten lists popping up all over the place at this time of year, I present my TOP 10 GUILTY PLEASURES OF 2004 (in no particular order) 10. Maroon 5's "This Love": Damn is this song catchy. It's in my head just typing out the title. I feel this sudden need to dance around my living room singing it. I don't know why. Help. 9. Justin Timberlake "Rock your body" - another catchy one. I eventually broke down and bought the JT cd. I'm hooked. I even admit to people I bought it. That's how hooked I am. 8. Elton John "Crocodile Rock" - nothing better than driving up hwy 22 from the crowsnest pass listening to this song way too loud and singing it into someone's answering machine during those few minutes of cell coverage. nothing. 7. Mean Girls. OK that's not so guilty - it was a cool-ass movie. who cares if it stars Lindsay Lohan. That made it even cooler in my books. And it gave me one of my 2 new years resolutions - I'll get to those later 6. 2Pac/Dr Dre - California Love - this song seemed to make a comeback towards the end of the year - I heard it everywhere. It's always made me dance. 5. German hip hop - if you can't bob your head to Fettes Brot and Freundeskreis, who can you bob your head to? Plus these guys write great lyrics. And sound cool too. Especially cool this year was hearing the Fettes Brot cover of Steve Miller's the Joker - translated and everything. 4. the word rad - I got hooked on saying rad in 2004. It's so rad. 3. Friendster - see if your friends are really as cool as you think they are. Or if that hottie you see at the pub all the time is single. and if so, how you two are connected so you can scam a conversation with him 2 months down the road.. or maybe you could just get drunk and go talk to him... 2. "Never Leave You" Lumidee - I heard this song every day for like 4 months. I love this song. I don't care what anyone says. I gotta get myself the cd, although the rest of it proably sucks. 1. Gin. I've developed quite a taste for Bombay Saphire and San Peligrino, twist of lime. For when I'm not drinking beer. Helps out with the things mentioned in 3. Ok I should have made this more. or topic oriented. I many change it. I'll likely come in and add links. and, for those of you interested: new years resolutions include no more fried food and no more unjustified girl-on-girl hate. posted by kim | 1:14 a.m.| (0) comments Tuesday, January 04, 2005 you know, I think of facinating things to post about all day while at work, and I write them down so I'll remember because I don't think I post enough anymore and when I do it's vague and uninteresting. I apologise. So I write these things down and then misplace the paper I write them on. It's likely somewhere in my bag. I'll be right on that. Man, January is an exciting month. I've got tickets to OYR's Liberators, Occupiers and Population, part of the high performance rodeo. It's thursday. I'm stoked. Then, the following Friday, I've got Suicide Girls tickets, also part of the high performance rodeo. Book club's the week after that. must get book read. and if I'm lucky I'll get to go out of town for a day or two sometime this month too. life is good. I think I'm getting too used to my mac at work - I keep forgetting I have the luxury of right clicking... posted by kim | 1:08 a.m.| (0) comments Saturday, January 01, 2005 if new years was any indication, it should be an interesting year... posted by kim | 3:55 p.m.| (0) comments |
