my city is still breathing back in the saddle |
Sunday, October 31, 2004 no longer having internet access at home is not conducive to blogging often. sorry. it'll pick up again. life's been uneventful, I've finally completely moved in. which is a good thing. have not completely unpacked, and am at the point where I'm getting too lazy to care. Hallowe'en has left me hung over and tired. with a queasy stomach. posted by kim | 5:59 p.m.| (2) comments Monday, October 18, 2004 first day at work uneventful. in other exciting news I keep forgetting to tell all 4 readers of this blog that book club selection of the month is all trendy and therefore is Ernesto Che Guevara's Motorcycle Diaries (too lazy to link - go use google). We're having a minor competition to see who's cool enough to get the non-movie cover (don't worry, I wasn't cool enough). Let me know if you want in on this coolness. I'm in the process of updating and reorganising my links. watch out for excitement in the coming months. oh yes. how many times have you heard that before. scroll down to october 3 for faint details of the calgary scenster weekend. posted by kim | 11:24 p.m.| (0) comments Sunday, October 17, 2004 it just keeps getting better. after M. moved into a beautiful condo Friday and I was hit with a wave of excitement (for her) and jealousy (of her) I found a wonderful well priced cozy apartment. without even looking. it just kinda fell into my lap. now must find darling boys to surround me and I will completely forget that there is snow on the ground (sticking!!!) before Hallowe'en. posted by kim | 10:34 p.m.| (0) comments Thursday, October 14, 2004 today is a good day. I have left the ranks of the unemployed and I heard from an old friend in South Africa. I also received my very first photo radar ticket in the mail (actually it came yesterday). thanks Calgary Police Service! I now have a lovely picture of my car on my fridge. posted by kim | 1:23 p.m.| (0) comments Tuesday, October 12, 2004 in case it wasn't apparent, I'm slowly blogging the "demi-canadian adventure" now that I'm home. and putting it into chronological order for y'all. cuz I know you care. in other excitement, book club is going trendy with The Motorcycle Diaries next month.. Kipling's Kim didn't go so well as no one was able to finish it and we mostly discussed what we didn't like about it. Civic elections are coming up next week and I've been away so much that I'm too apathetic to even link to a site about them, or even a site encouraging people to vote. sorry. go to google or something. Calgary won (by a landslide) the great western-canadian-where-does-Kim-want-to-live debate, although Vancouver did suprisingly well. so, I guess I'm here to stay for a little longer. will continue to go on and on about the trip for a bit longer, so keep scrolling down. posted by kim | 11:20 p.m.| (0) comments Sunday, October 03, 2004 we rolled into Calgary just in time for rush hour on tuesday, September 28th. went home, got changed, made an appearance at the ship. were going to go to a CIFF event but it was sold out. so we went home. woke up Wednesday and went to check out the Calgary Zoo. dude is the Zoo a cool place - I would highly recommend it for a date. yes, there's that caged animal thing but they seem to be treated pretty well - then again, what do I know. Wednesday night we went out for dinner with my family to El Sombrero and then back to the ship for a pint with my darling brother. Thursday we started off at the calgary tower. I like sitting up there and looking down on the city. unfortunately, it was rainy and therefore the view was obscured, but, somehow, the urban sprawl seems less evil when you're looking down on it. maybe because it brings attention to all the parks involved. or maybe because I get to run around the tower and point at all the places I've lived. I like causing scenes. Thursday night we started what would turn into a weekend of scensterness. the WCMA showcases had begun, so we went and checked out Ridley Bent, the Mad Bomber Society and Chad Van Galen at Broken City. Ridley Bent was awesome. I lauged when I heard the term "hick-hop" that some music reviewer type had coined to label him, but I thought he was really cool. The Mad Bomber Society got the house dancing, as well as themselves. It had been a while since I'd seen people playing insturments on random tables throughout a bar - I had a good time, and I don't really even like ska all that much. Chad Van Galen was great as always, but a little to calm for the acts preceeding. my companions weren't as impressed as they could have been. too bad. went shopping Friday or maybe we went shopping Thursday and went to Lake Lousie/Moraine Lake/Banff on Friday. I can't remember. went back to broken city that night for more WCMA action - it was Burnt, Kraink, Eugene Ripper and Canned Hamm this night. can't really remember much of the bands with the exception of Vancouver's Canned Hamm. If these guys are playing anywhere near you check them out, they're the coolest thing since umm, something else cool. These guys can't sing or dance but are by far the most entertaining thing I have seen in a long time. they invite audience participation, and were in their boxers at one point. some of my drinking companions were not impressed but I know I was. and I was the DD so we all know it wasn't the liquor speaking. honest. I will so check these guys out next time they're in Calgary. can't remember how we spent Saturday, but went to the night gallery that evening for the boompa! records showcase, featuring the dudes, sparrow, run chico run, billy + the lost boys and the salteens. I'll admit I missed the Salteens, the night gallery was becoming too hot and I had to get out. the Dudes played much better than any of the previous times I'd seen them - I was pleasantly surprised. Was also quite impressed with run chico run. Sunday we headed west to Kamloops. posted by kim | 11:48 p.m.| (0) comments |
