my city is still breathing
back in the saddle

you know how there's always some landmark in any city that you can always find due to the amazingly huge amount of road signs pointing one in the direction to said landmark? Like in Winnipeg there's the airport. as long as you know where the airport is you can find your way around the city in relation to it, because there's road signs pointing to it everywhere. It's almost as if they're encouraging you to get the hell out of there and go to some warm, tropical destination. It's easier to find than hwy 1, and there are about 20 different routes to it from where I used to live, in the south east, so one can imagine the number of signs. Calgary's different. When I first moved here, it was simply the U of C. you could find the U of C from anywhere. Now it seems to be post secondary institutions in general. A few years ago I noticed signs pointing to Devry all over the place, but those seem to have either disappeared or faded into the other millions of road signs littering our roads and distracting drivers. I've recently begun noticing Mount Royal College signs all over the place. What does this say about Calgary's self-image? Winnipeggers are encouraged to get the hell out of town, Calgarians are encouraged to get a sub-par overpriced education so they can go work for one of the many lovely oil companies. It's odd.
By the way, the new weakerthans album came out today (I guess yesterday technically).. it fucking rules. I got the last copy at the record store, so damn was I a happy camper....

The Gender Genie
This was facinating, although in an odd way. Apparently, when I write a paper I write like a man, when I write an email, I write like a woman. Umm what does this say? That papers (ie "professional or academic" writing style) is masculine, and that, dare I say it, private sphere writing is feminine. F-ing stupid. Althoguh don't blame it on the people who made the page...

damn I forgot how much I like this album. that is all. I should go to bed. My life's been uneventful lately. had a fun night out the other day, went to the drum and monkey, and then to the ship, hanging out with a few regulars from my work, telling them I was runing our professional relationship. the beer and jagermeister was flowing so I was happy. went to the black lounge the night before with an old friend, but ran into my brother and had to catch up with him too. it was interesting. ok bed time, sleep is a good thing, I have a busy day of work and beer drinking tomorrow...

so I figure I should blog.. I'm in the midst of cleaning my house right now and if you know me you know what a bum I am and how I let everything get really messy and then clean for a whole day.. but how I really hate cleaning and have toyed with just hiring a maid even though I am a student and really shouldn't be able to afford to pay someone to clean my house. anyhow, went to Allie and Duncan's for coffee last night. It was nice, I like sitting around talking and drinking liquids.. beer or coffee are my favorite choices. am in for a big night at the ol' Ship tonight most likely. Wiggum keeps hampering my cleaning efforts.. he's currently knocking things off the desk, simply because he can. Thanks for that Wiggs.. anyhow, I should get back to cleaning. or maybe I should ftp some pics so I can put them up on here. wouldn't that be nice..

so I took the political compass test.. at this website right here yo! It's really cool as it rejects the left right spectrum and instead puts it on a grid with four quadrants. I'll stop explaining, go see it for yourself.. my scores were:
Economic Left/Right: -7.88
Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.44
which makes me a fairly far lefty with fairly strong libertarian intentions. imagine that. anyhow, I should be doing something productive..

The Globe and Mail - letting back Barriere residents back in
this story made me happy, as I'm thinking about going back out there once I'm done class (2 more classes - all I gotta do is finish my paper.. yay me!!) for a few days, I should get a f-ing vacation for god sakes.. then again maybe I should go to winnipeg.. anyhow.. that's all.. what else, I'm getting really sick of hearing about this gay marriage so called controversy.. could anyone tell me why this is an issue? For f-ing sakes, if people wanna get married let them get f-ing married.. have I posted about this yet? who knows, I will again.. I mean, is the fact that straight people like me think marriage is a stupid thing and therefore have no intentions of getting married not more of a threat to the so called institution of marriage than two people who love eachother wanting to get married, regardless of their sexual preference. It's f-ing stupid, I'm sick of hearing about it. I spent 4 hours looking at the 2000 Canadian Election Study stats this afternoon while working on my stupid paper/lab (am very angry about the amount of time and paper I spent running crosstabs this afternoon) and, according to those stats, not many canadians have a major issue with gay marriage. most seem to be indifferent. but then that was 3 years ago I guess.. anyhow, I'm going to watch the news or something.. I've been too busy lately, with class and work and u of c 101 training..

don't you hate when someone's mad at you and you can't quite figure out why?

so I was all excited for my holiday this past weekend. And it ended up being alot of fun, although it did not at all go as planned. We left edmonton at 5 am so we could be at the lake in time for lunch.. we had planned on stopping in Valemount for gas but soon found that the power was out, and we;d have to wait a while in line. Screw this, we have a quarter tank left, we said, and continued on to Blue River where the power was also out. by this point we'd heard rumours of the yellowhead being closed off at little fort, just north of our destination of Barriere, so we decided we'd stop. Getting gas was fun. Lisa and Maggie drank beer. I was all choked that I couldn't, I had to drive. About an hour and a half later we were finally back on the road with a full tank of gas. Life was good. we drove a little longer and were stopped at Little Fort. suprise suprise, power was out here too. so we took the alternate route, going to Kamloops via 100 mile house .. fun fun.. this is where it all got tedious. I was tired, out of cell range, and had no idea where my family was. They had officially been evacuated from East Barriere Lake, although I wouldn't have been suprised if my father refused to go (he's like that). The car overheated on the big hill on Hwy 24 (if you know the area) as we were driving up it at 2 in the afternoon in temperatures exceeding 40 celcius (and we'd been driving for 9 hours nearly straight by this point).. I eventually got ahold of my parents, who were about an hour behind us in the whole travelling thing, and were also heading to Kamloops (as there were places to stay there. HAve I mentioned why they were evacuated? There's major forest fires in the Kamloops area. Especially between Kamloops and Little Fort. ya.. so eventually we got to Kamloops, around 6 that night. We stayed with some friends of the family, who were amazingly hospitable and wonderful. the following day was my birthday. we had cake and drank beer and watched the fires burn on the hill. Apparently the cabin is going to be fine, although there's no chance in hell we can get in to see for a while, the fires are blocking all roads in. I was devestated when I heard that my home (that's what the cabin is for me) was quite possibly burning, so am very happy to hear it'll be ok. Sunday we came home. it's a good thing we did, the other two routes east from the bc interior are closed so anyone coming to Alberta has to take hwy 1. It's a long weekend. The roads were insane yesterday, I"m sure they'd be hell today.. Anyhow, I gotta go get ready for work. I decided to go back early seeing as I'm home and all...
