I watched Moulin Rouge a few years ago, after it first came out on video. I remember really not liking it. I'm currently writing a paper on it, comparing it to GW Pabst's film version of Brecht's Threepenny Opera. I've basically been watching Moulin Rouge for the past 2 days, over and over, fascinated. Once I started looking at it as an example of Brechtian epic theatre, but postmodern rather than Marxist, it got really really good. Honest. This is the first time I've liked a movie more from thinking about it rather than less (normally I start thinking critically about something I really like and begin to really really hate it.. ). Anyhow, I'm currently in the process of writing a kick-ass paper I'm really excited about. On a topic I picked on a whim (I chose the 2 films to compare because both were "musicals" and "period pieces"... I didn't expect this epic theatre connection).. this paper is going so much better than the last one, I actually want to write it. I'm such a geek.

as I'm sure you all know, Friday is Buy Nothing Day. A group out of montreal has taken it a step further... Steal Something Day. I can't decide if I support this or not. Parts of it appeal to me: (the Robin Hood arguement).
At the same time, I've never shoplifted in my life (seriously). I also somewhat have a problem with the idea of this group attacking BND. While I agree that the premise behind BND is somewhat flawed, it's most important aspect is getting people to think about their consumption habits:
for example, BND gets me thinking: I have to give up my morning coffees (I only get 2 cups at home rather than 3 or 4 throughout my morning), be sure to have food in the house (as I don't cook all that often, I rarely have food), be sure to have time to take transit (so as to avoid paying for parking, my bus pass is paid for). BND makes me realise what I spend in a day - as well as where and how I spend it. The Christmas shopping aspect of the whole event is easy to ignore, it's way too early for me to have started with that mess (although I do have a few things done, by accident almost). It's the firmly entrenched daily habits I notice. So I see the value in something like BND.
I also appreciate the brilliant actions that come out of BND, go to adbusters to see what I'm talking about..
So, while I see the flaws in BND, I don't think a day encouraging stealing would have the same effect. I see the arguement, I see the value, but the moderate in me (dare I say it) couldn't take part. I have issues with property destruction, no matter who it belongs to (and take flak for it all the time)... stealing (even for noble causes) is something else I may have to re-evaluate... were I looking at this outside of the context of BND, I may have a completely different opinion on it.

I'm currently writing a "critical analysis of a memoir" on Defying Hitler by Sebastian Haffner for my HTST 333 class. I really enjoyed reading it, which makes it really hard to write this, especially reading all the dry historical articles I have to read and compare it to. anyhow, if you're looking for an interesting christmas read, or that special something for the germanophile on your list, pick this one up... I really liked it.

well, this is what Ralph was doing in Ottawa. I guess you could say he was working (although he's giving dinner speeches, does he get paid for this? how much? and how come on my time?), although whether or not this is for the betterment of the province may be debatable..
"Stay out of our constitutional authority to run health care as we see fit," he said. "They shouldn't be telling us how to run our health care system."
Well, Ralph, maybe they'd be able to give us some nice, helpful advice, maybe run it a little better than it seems to be here, or maybe they'd at least be able to improve the consistencies from province to province, or help with communications between the provinces regarding health care issues - especially since all the other provinces seem to be involved - or maybe we should just make things worse by excluding ourselves. Hey well we're at it can we have two tiered health care? please?? I can't really even figure out why you seem to think this is a bad idea, with the exception of the constitution argument. This from a man who wants to use the notwithstanding clause to prevent loving same sex couples from *gasp* getting married, even though it's been deemed against the charter. So you like the constitution when it suits you, hey Ralph?

oh well, less than 2 months left in your fiefdom....

"My purpose for existence is not to appear in the legislature just to be hammered by the Liberals.''said Premier Klein. Actually, Ralph, I think it kind of is. You see, they're the opposition. Although they're kinda small in Alberta, you still have to answer to them. They realise that you can hammer through bills with your big ol' majority, but they still deserve to be able to question you. It might not be the purpose for your existence, but it is your job. Had you said that you wouldn't be in the leg due to some f-ing great thing you were doing for the province (like going out in search of the missing billions needed for education) then maybe it'd be ok. Maybe you did say that, and CFCN, which normally seems to love you, just chose not to report it. Anyhow, accountability is what it's all about. You know, having to answer for your actions. Explain why you're doing what you're doing. I realise you have ministers to do this, some more competent than others. Still, it'd be nice if you showed up to work from time to time, I do help pay your salary.

I would just like to say that I am afraid of Paul Martin. I've been trying to blog about this for a while now and just can't quite put my finger on it. I had to get it out anyway. Maybe I'll sit down on Wednesday and write a proper entry to expand on this feeling of mine. Maybe I won't, due to my laziness and all my intelligent thought going into writing about WWII memoirs and moulin rouge these days. maybe I should just start posting my term papers. then again maybe not. anyway, I just really really felt a need to share my fear. yay sharing. ok I promise I'll explain it, Paul Martin deserves an explanation, because it's really not his fault. I blame it on the media. CTV Newsnet in particular. I should go to sleep.

went and saw Joel Plaskett (formerly of Thrush Hermit fame) last night at the Liberty Lounge. I guess I technically saw The Joel Plaskett Emergency. If they come to your town, go see them. It was like a 2 hour set (I'm not exaggerating), 2 hours of straight Joel Plaskett. Well worth the $10 price of admission, although I can imagine that if you didn't like Joel Plaskett it could be kinda torturous. The Dudes opened. Pretty standard Dudes show.. nothing to really comment on here.

I finally went out and bought the Reverie Sound Revue CD. it's as great as everyone's been saying it is. they're not making it up. so you all should go out and part with $10 for your own copy. you won't regret it, I promise. apparently it's really hard to find outside of Calgary (where you can get it at Megatunes) and Toronto (so says the RSR website).. so if you really really want a copy and you're not in one of these two places, let me know, maybe I'll stop by Megatunes for you on my way to the Ship...
I also bought the new cd out from the jayhawks, rainy day music. I've let to really listen to it so no opinion from me yet. but it leads me to another rant. what's with cds coming with these sleeves lately? like they still come with a box (I'm not talking the cds that come only in paper).. no they come with a normal cd box, but then that box is in another sleeve that you have to slide it in and out of, kinda like a book jacket. I mean, this cd was in one, so was wilco's yankee hotel foxtrot, blur's the best of (ok not so recent), and bad religion's the process of belief. who's idea was this? what's the purpose of these things? I see no use for them besides to piss me off, yet I can't bring myself to put them in the recycling and be done with them.

WTF?! I'm trying to access my history class website, as well as my film class website and both are fucking down. how the hell am I supossed to know if there's something I'm to have done for tomorrow? How am I to come up with an excuse if I don't know if it has to be done or not. I guess this is payback for "losing" my outline. Or maybe for extreme procrastination. I think I have until Friday. Who knows. Damn you U of C, don't you know 2:19 AM is a crucial time for your websites to be up, for the good of many many students. Damn you U of C. I'll just have to go to sleep.
